Abstract Research in China for the visiting missionaries from western countries mostly focuses on areas such as history, culture and education, religious cases and social influences, etc. There has not been any document which fully recorded this special historical phenomenon. With the rapid development of tourism, to review this historical phenomenon from the perspective of travel is significant. In this article, activities of visiting missionaries from western countries were considered as religious. Factors influencing visiting missionaries from western countries in the late Qing Dynasty were systematically analyzed by choosing the late Qing Dynasty as the time segment when ingression of visiting missionaries was massive, and by making good use of the three-component tourism system. The research results showed that there were three main factors working on activities of visiting missionaries:First is the cultural and economic factors of those countries where visiting missionaries came from; second is the political and religious policies, plus security measures in the tourist destination; and the third is transportation. All these factors played a positive role in affecting the activities of visiting missionaries from western countries.
